The City of Arlington saw a 5 percent decrease in overall crime from 2023 to 2024 according to new year-end data released by the Arlington Police Department.
As part of its commitments to transparency and data-driven decision making, APD voluntarily submits annual crime data to the National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS), a national database maintained by the FBI that helps law enforcement better understand crime trends, identify resources needed to combat crime, and steer discussions on best practices and solutions.
Under NIBRS, crimes are divided into three categories:
- Crimes Against Persons: Assault, Homicide, Human Trafficking, Kidnapping, and Sex Offenses
- Crimes Against Property: Arson, Bribery, Burglary, Forgery, Fraud, Theft, Vandalism, and Robbery Offenses
- Crimes Against Society: Drug, Gambling, Prostitution, Weapon Violations, and Animal Cruelty Offenses
Although homicides were up slightly from the previous year (17 in 2024 vs 15 in 2023), Arlington experienced a 1 percent reduction in Crimes Against Persons in 2024, led by decreases in Assault Offenses and Sex Offenses. The city also saw a 6 percent reduction in Crimes Against Property and a 5 percent reduction in Crimes Against Society.
This marks the second straight year Arlington has posted decreases across all three categories. Since 2022, overall crime in the city has fallen 9 percent and Crimes Against Persons have fallen 11 percent.
“Over the last three years, we’ve implemented multiple initiatives, strategies, and new technologies to help us more proactively combat crime,” said Chief of Police Al Jones. “When I see these statistics, it tells me that we’re on the right path. We still have work to do. But positive momentum is building.”
