Congratulations to our local basketball state champions – the Mansfield Summit High School Jaguars and the Kennedale Wildcats!
On Saturday, the Jaguars defeated Fort Bend Marshall 54-47 in the 5A Division II State Championship at the Alamadome in San Antonio. The win was the first state basketball championship in Mansfield Summit High’s history. The school will host a community celebration to recognize the team, managers, trainers and coaches at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12 in the Summit High School varsity gym. Arlington City Council District 2 Representative Raul H. Gonzalez will also read a proclamation to celebrate the win.
“I just know it’s a lot of hard work—I think about the kids and the work they put in,” said head coach Emund Prichett in a Mansfield ISD news release. “I know these kids care about each other. We showed people what teamwork can do and what believing in each other can do.”
Summit High School principal Jason Mutterer has spent his entire 23-year education career at Summit High School, 15 of those as head basketball coach. For him, this moment is especially sweet.
“I am so proud of our boys’ basketball players and coaches for bringing a state championship back to our community and to those who wore a Summit jersey before them,” Mutterer said. “They are not only champions on the court but off the court as well.”
The Kennedale Wildcats boys basketball team, under the leadership of Coach Doug Groff and assistant coaches Coach Matt Casey and Coach Jay Jurchisin, secured the 4A Division II State Championship title on Saturday.
“We appreciate the fans' vocal and proud support. Our team's impressive achievement demonstrates that despite our size, we possess a strong spirit, proving it's always a great day to be a Wildcat,” Kennedale ISD posted on its Facebook page after the win.
Kennedale ISD and Mansfield ISD serve students in the City of Arlington limits.
