The Arlington Public Library has a new collection of large print books designed to help children who may have difficulty reading because of visual impairment, dyslexia, neurodivergent learning needs or other challenges.
The Public Library, which already offered a large print book collection geared for adults, recently purchased the large print juvenile book collection thanks to Texas Book Festival collection enhancement grant of $2,500. Since 1995, the Texas Book Festival has supported libraries across Texas with the goal of enhancing their print, e-book, and audiobook collections to best serve local populations.
Research from the School Library Journal indicates that large print books are especially beneficial for students in grades 3 to 12, as they help reduce anxiety and improve focus.
“Large print bridges the gap between effort and enjoyment for students with reading differences. When words feel approachable, children unlock their capacity to engage with stories rather than fighting the text,” said Library Services Manager Daniel Bull.
The new juvenile collection features 142 titles, including the popular “Diary of a Wimpy Kid,” books by Rick Riordan, who is the author of the “Percy Jackson” series, and award-winning titles such as “Hello Universe” and “Esperanza Rising.”
“Large print isn’t just about bigger text—it’s about bigger opportunities. For a child who’s struggled to finish a book, these titles can be transformative. We’re grateful to the Texas Book Festival for helping us make reading more inclusive and joyful,” Bull said.
Books are currently available at the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library, but the Public Library will evaluate adding large print juvenile books to the branch locations based on demand. Library card holders can request books that will be delivered to any Arlington Public Library branch for pickup.
