The Arlington Police Department can now confirm the suspect in the shooting incident that occurred September 28, 2023 at Vandergriff Honda is 25-year-old Abbas Al-Mutairy.

He has been charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault Against a Public Servant, one count of Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, and one count of Deadly Conduct.

Mr. Al-Mutairy remains in the hospital and is currently listed in critical condition.

The criminal and administrative investigations remain ongoing.

On Thursday, September 28, 2023, at approximately 6:31 p.m., the Arlington Police Department responded to the Vandergriff Honda dealership, located in the 1100 block of W. Interstate 20, to investigate reports that an armed man was in the parking lot firing shots at the building.

When officers arrived on scene, they immediately located the suspect in the parking lot and engaged him. Based on the suspect’s actions, multiple officers fired their service weapons, striking the suspect. He was transported to an area hospital where he is currently receiving medical treatment. At this time, we do not have an update on his condition.

Through the course of their investigation, detectives learned the suspect is a former employee of the dealership who was recently terminated.

No officers were injured.

There were multiple employees and customers at the dealership when the suspect arrived and began shooting. None of them were injured.

As is standard anytime an officer fires their service weapon, two investigations will take place:

  • A criminal investigation to review the entire incident.
  • An administrative investigation to determine whether officers followed all department policies and procedures when they fired their service weapons.
